Tanzye Hill, Founder & CEO

Welcome, I am Tanzye Hill, Founder of Birth Manifesta. I am the namesake of my great-grandmother, Mama Tansy, who was brought into this world by her mother in love, my great-great grandmother, Emma Swain — a Grand Midwife. That lineage lives in me. It is the reason I do this work, and the way I understand what it means to truly hold a family through birth.

I am a lineage birth keeper. Over more than a decade of full circle birth work, it has been my honor to attend births from the home setting to the OR. As a midwife apprentice, I was assisted at a triplet home birth — an experience that reminded me just how vast, sacred, and humbling this work truly is. Every birth has taught me something. Every family has trusted me with something irreplaceable.

Before birth work, I was and still am an educator — and before that, a student at Tennessee State University, an HBCU planted in the same community I have spent nearly two decades serving as an organizer, community advocate, activist, and reproductive justice champion. That through-line has never broken. The children I once taught grew into young women who later called me to their births. Some of those same women now train alongside me as doulas and apprentices — a circle that keeps widening, the way it was always meant to.

Becoming a mother has shifted me in ways I did not anticipate. I am raising my son — my godson, whom I became the legal guardian of — and that journey has cracked me open and made me more whole at the same time. It has deepened my understanding of what it means to be held, to advocate fiercely for someone you love, and to trust that love is its own kind of protection.

Birth Manifesta was born out of what I have witnessed across all of these years — as a student, a teacher, a doula, a midwife apprentice, an activist, and now a mother. Families moving through one of the most sacred experiences of their lives without real support, real information, or anyone who truly understood what they carried. This organization exists because birth is sacred. Because the memory of how a mother is held stays with her. Because that memory deserves protecting.

At the center of all of it is a belief I have carried since the beginning: when families are truly held, and birth workers are truly equipped, something generational shifts. That is what we are here to do.

  • Available for speaking engagements, workshops, panels, and trainings focused on birthwork, education, community care, and maternal health. Drawing from her background in education and her experience as the founder of Birth Manifesta, she brings a thoughtful, grounded perspective on building stronger support systems for families and birthworkers. Her talks are centered on connection, accessibility, and practical tools that can be applied in real-world care and community settings.

  • Consultations for individuals and organizations seeking guidance in birthwork, education, program development, and community-centered care. These sessions provide space to talk through goals, challenges, and ideas while receiving practical insight rooted in experience and a deep understanding of maternal health and education. Each consultation is tailored to meet you where you are and support the next step in your work or journey.
